🎥 THE FORGOTTEN OCCUPATION
Alain Martin's grandfather, Brunel Martin, grew up during the brutal American occupation of Haiti, but later became a strong voice for the country that had helped shape and destroy his own upbringing. Ten years after his death, Martin writes a letter to his grandfather in an attempt to understand and reconcile these contradictions.
The screening will be followed by a conversation with director Alain Martin and artist Jelsen Lee Innocent. The event is free, but space is limited, so get a ticket.

Family is a clear common thread in Mamoru Hosoda's filmography. Here he explores the trials and tribulations his family faces when the spoiled four-year-old Kun-chan gets a little sister – Mirai – which translates to future (Mirai no Mirai – Mirai from the future).
🎥 THE STORY OF THE LAST CHRYSANTHEMUM
This film is about the son of a great kabuki actor, Shoko, who also dreams of becoming an actor. He receives a lot of flattery and praise from his family, but only the maid Toku dares to tell him that he is actually quite talentless. However, she encourages him not to give up. Shoko immediately falls for the sincere Toku, but the family looks on with less than kind eyes that their son is associating with a miserable maid.

In one of the better suburbs of Connecticut, we meet middle-aged Ned while he is enjoying himself in the swimming pool of one of his friends. On a whim, Ned decides to swim home, from pool to pool. As he approaches home, both we and Ned get an insight into his life, and everything is far from as problem-free and rosy as we first imagined.

This is an indie film made with a budget of only 150,000 NOK. Nevertheless it ended up winning at Queens World Film Festival, Best Film of the Festival, Best Director. It also won Best War Drama at Manhattan Film Festival.

🎥 STARS IN BROAD DAYLIGHT
Director Ossama Mohammed's debut depicts the Ghazi family, who are preparing for two weddings. The family is dominated by an authoritarian older brother, a metaphor for the country's regime. The film is a demonstration of the artistic skill of the director, who uses a coded visual language to circumvent censorship. The film was banned in Syria after one screening in 1988, but was distributed in Europe. After Mohammed criticized the regime during the 2011 riots, he went into exile in France.
